  Today is epiphany, that's why we cook Qolqas(Taro) and eat Sugarcane. but do you know why Egyptian eat Taro stew and Sugarcane while celebrating epiphany? Because, taro is cooked by being soaked and boiled in water as well as sugar cane is planted into a lot of water, so both of them are symbol of baptism. 오늘은 주현절입니다. 그래서 이집트 사람들이 토란 스튜 만들고 사탕수수를 먹습니다. 혹시 여러분들은 주현절을 보내면서 토란과 사탕수수를 먹는 이유 아 십니까? 왜냐하면 토란은 물에 담기고 끓여서 요리하고 사탕수수는 많은 물에 심기 때문입니다. 세례 같습니다.   Today Egyptian celebrat the birthday of prophet Muhammad Al-Mawled Al-Nabawi. The celebration since Fatimid era includes buying 'Halwat  Al-Mawled' (nutty sweets made of nuts and sugarsyrup) & 'Arouset Al Mawlid' (Sugar doll that covered with coloured paper) The doll was a symbol of Mawlid and newly married couple. There are 2 theories related the origin of the doll. 1st theory: During Fatimid era the ruler Al Hakim Ba'amrullah dressed up as a soldier while riding a horse to visit a town with his wife she wore a white dress with a Jasmine flower crown on her head.  In Egypt there are similar old folk stories like )grandpa Mangtae and Go miho (Nine- tailed fox    Al- Naddaha us similar to Go miho who seduces and kill men. Abu shiwal is similar to grandpa Mangtae who kidnaps  misbehaving children  한국 옛날 동화 '구미호나 망태할아버지 같은 동화는 이지트에도 있습니다. 구미호와 비슷하게 알 나드다하라는 여자는 남자를 꼬시고 죽여요. 망태할아버지 같이 아부 쉬왈라는 사람은 말 잘 안 듣는 아이들을 납치해요.

It's called "고무신 거꾸로 신지마" the literal meaning of this idiom is "Don't wear Gomusin backwards" it's a kind of favour boyfriend ask his girlfriend not to dump or cheat on him during his military service. ☆ The story behind this idiom  When a girl in a hurry to run away from her boyfriend that she wear the rubber shoes upside down.  Side note: Gomusin (고무신) are tradtional Korean shoes made out of rubber. it can also used as a slang for girl whose boyfriend is serving in the military.  In Egypt there's a similar kind of shoes which women wear usually in fields because it's easy to clean. It was an act that banned men from having long hair and women wearing skirts shorter than 17 centimeters above the knee. Violators were often taken to police stations and had their hair cut against their will. It was my first time to hear about it in 2014 when I watched Jackie chan episode on "Happy Together". Korean people suffered alot in order to keep their hair long. It wasn't limited to 1970s, During Japan invasion there was "The single command"/ 단발령 Have you ever heard about that?  We have similar holiday it's called 'Eid' it lasts for 3 days as well. We eat 'Kahk' it's kind of traditional round cookies. We visit our relatives and children can take money(Eidyia)  from their grandparents, similar to '세뱃돈'. Some people would prefer to visit graves as well. Instead of offering food for ancestors we distribute the so called 'Rahma' which consists of some baked goods called 'Qoras/Koras' and fruits to neighbours & relatives. Some may donate money to poor as well. 이집트에도 추석 비슷한 명절이 있습니다. '이드'라는 명절입니다. 3일 동안 보냅니다. 우리는 '카흐크 (전통적인 둥그란 쿠키)를 먹습니다. 조부모 댁에 방문하고 아이들은 조부모와 친척에게 '세뱃돈' 같은 돈 '이디야' 를 받을 수 있습니다. 어떤 사람들은 산소를 방문하기도 하고, 조상들에게 음식을 만드는 대신에 '라흐마'를 이웃과 친척에게 나누어 줍니다. '라흐마'는 특별한 빵(코라스)과 과일입니다. 어떤 사람들은 가난한 사람들에게 돈을 기부할 수도 있습니다.
